United Methodist Church

Mission Statement

"The Russia Initiative program began in 1991 when the General Board of Global Ministries re-established the presence of Methodism in the former Soviet Union. It was designed to provide hands-on ministry opportunities for individual United Methodists and local church groups in countries of the former Soviet Union. Also, to be in ministry with the Russia United Methodist Church, providing financial, logistical and spiritual support for its ministry, which includes ministries to women and children at risk in the former SU society."

Overview of Ministry Activity

"The Russia Initiative has established eighty eight new United Methodist congregations in the former Soviet Union, and a ministry of humanitarian aid and people-to-people exchanges in thirty three additional cities with no UM presence. The RI ministry is done in partnership with local Russian churches and NGOs with special emphasis on orphanages and other institutions serving persons at risk. Partnerships are formed between the U. S. groups and organizations in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Tajikistan. The partnerships are dependent on indigenous groups and individuals in specific areas of ministry. Access to orphanages and other servant institutions is provided by the local groups."

Plans and Goals

"To utilize the existing structure consisting of Russian United Methodist Churches, and Russian NGOs, supported by American UM congregations. Also, to cooperate with projects supported by U.S. Aid, administered through the United Methodist Committee on Relief of the General Board of Global Ministries. The structure is such that cooperation with other denominations and agencies is always possible, and encouraged. The Russia Initiative is open to developing plans to cooperate with and participate in CoMission for Children at Risk, subject to consultation."
